MAHARAJA JAIPUR Late SAWAI BRIGADIER BHAWANI SINGH

Remembering "MAHARAJA JAIPUR" - Late 'SAWAI' BRIGADIER BHAWANI SINGH (10 Para,MahaVeer Chakra) on his 8th death anniversary, A king who earned his Para wings, an officer who took 1 rupee as a salary during his entire military career,an officer who led the 10 Para to capture Chachro in Sindh (Virwah and Nagarparker thereafter), 80kms deep inside the Pakistani territory in the 1971 war,an officer who rose to the rank of Brigadier after his retirement (One of the few officers to be promoted post retirement),
Remembering BRIGADIER BHAWANI SINGH SAWAI - the last titular #Maharaja of Jaipur. A brave soldier, an Officer and a Gentleman, who could have chosen a luxurious lifestyle, instead he become a #Commando and fought in the Indo Pak war, earning second highest military decoration - MVC.

Brig Bhawani upheld the finest traditions of the Indian Army and the House of the Kachawas. Like his father who served the Army as Lt General, he was keen to join the #IndianArmy too and was commissioned into 3 Cavalry in 1954 and later served in the President`s Bodyguard for eight years. In 1963, he was posted to Headquarters 50 Independent Parachute Brigade. He volunteered to carry out a parachute drop at a height of 20,000 feet without oxygen. Later he was adjutant of the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun for a few years. In 1970, he helped train Mukti Bahini before the commencement of the Bangladesh Liberation War.

During the 1971 Indo Pak War, (then) Col Bhawani Singh led the boys from 10 PARA SF in an 80 kms deep penetration raid at #Chachro in Sind, Pak. For four days and nights, he led relentless attacks on enemy posts creating panic and confusion forcing the enemy to retreat, leaving behind large number of prisoners and equipment.

In 1972, he took voluntary retirement for personal reasons after the demise of his father. However, his heart continued to beat for his commandos and Indian Army.

His regiment, 10 Para Commando took part in Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka. On 10 October 1987, a jeep of 10 Para was hijacked as reprisal of capture of about 200 LTTE rebels and all the five occupants were killed. Based on Intelligence reports of the presence of rebels in Jaffna University, a heliborne operation was carried out on 12 October by 10 Para and 13 Sikh LI. The troops who had landed in the football field came under intense fire as the LTTE had intercepted the radio message and had laid an ambush. They suffered heavy casualties and the remaining troops were extracted by a detachment of 65 Armoured Regiment. The failure resulted in a setback to the morale of the unit. Lt Col Bhawani Singh MVC visited the unit on a request from Prime Minister. His presence and words helped to restore the morale of the boys. The President of India bestowed on him the rank of Brigadier, a rare honour for a retired officer.

Sir, you are remembered fondly with great reverence by all in the Indian Army. भावभीनी श्रद्धांजलि, शत शत नमन JAI HIND
